Water Safety Plans  (WSP)

Water Safety Plans are a methodology recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) since 2004 to ensure safe drinking water.

The standard EN 15975-2: 2013 reinforces the importance of this methodology and broadened the scope for the integrity of the drinking water supply system
that should be suitable to meet specified quality, quantity, continuity and pressure targets in accordance with legal/regulatory requirements and the drinking water supplier’s objectives.

This methodology is based on risk assessment and management throughout the system, from catchment to the consumer. In this way it is possible to identify and anticipate any problems that may exist and implement measures to prevent them from occurring. It provides guidance on how to apply effective and achievable management actions in order to improve the integrity of the drinking water supply system, helping to detect situations of deviation from the normal operation of the system earlier and react to them faster to never compromise the systems´ safety.

Services we provide in this area:

  • Technical assistance to develop and/or implement WSP.
  • WSP audit
  • WSP training

Sanitation Safety Planning (SSP)

Sanitation Safety Planning are a methodology recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to help sanitation system operators minimize health risk, maximize health benefits and protect environment, namely catchment area for drinking water.

Prevent contamination by direct or indirect exposure to sewage, human waste or sludge requires a safe management, on the basis of a risk assessment, in the entire chain of sanitation. Involves multiple stakeholders and exposed groups in the collection, transportation, treatment, disposal and use of sanitation waste (by-products), which makes your implementation a major challenge.

As water availability problems increase, wastewater reuse becomes more a reality, but it needs to be done safely. Of course, health concerns are a major challenge for these approaches, as well as gaining the confidence of the general public.

Services we provide in this area:

  • Technical assistance
  • SSP training

Infrastructure Asset Management (IAM)

Water supply and wastewater systems are made up of infrastructures that have a useful life and in most of the context are very old or bad maintained. Therefore, adequate management of existing infrastructures is necessary to ensure the economic and financial sustainability of services in the medium and long term, and to ensure adequate levels of service throughout its useful life.

Services we provide in this area:

  • Technical assistance

Communication Plans for Drinking Water Contamination Incidents

With the revision of the national legislation, since 2019 January 1st, all drinking water utilites must have a communication plan for drinking water contamination incidents (n.º 8 of article 8 of Decree-Law n.º 306/2007, of August 27, with the wording given by Decree-Law n.º 152/2017, of December 7).

Services we provide in this area:

  • Technical assistance in the development of the communication plan for drinking water contamination incidents.
