What are SSP?
Sanitation Safety Planning are a risk assessment and risk management methodology recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) to help sanitation system operators minimize health risk, maximize health benefits and protect environment, namely catchment area for drinking water.
Prevent contamination by direct or indirect exposure to sewage, human waste or sludge requires a safe management, on the basis of a risk assessment, in the entire chain of sanitation. Involves multiple stakeholders and exposed groups in the collection, transportation, treatment, disposal and use of sanitation waste (by-products), which makes your implementation a major challenge.
As water availability problems increase, wastewater reuse becomes more a reality, but it needs to be done safely. Of course, health concerns are a major challenge for these approaches, as well as gaining the confidence of the general public.
