Infrastructure asset management (IAM) is a methodology based on performance, risk and cost assessment of existing infrastructures and according with future needs.
In the Portuguese context, the infrastructures of water supply and sewerage systems are mostly ageing. Therefore, it is needed proper management of existing infrastructure to ensure an appropriate service levels and economic and financial sustainability.
Legal framework
The Portuguese Decree-Law n.º 194/2009, of August 20 is very clear. All water utilities with more than 30 000 inhabitants must have an Infrastructure Asset Management system.
